USS Sizemore

From Bravo Fleet

The USS Sizemore (NCC-74012) is a Steamrunner-class Federation starship operating in the 24th Century. The Sizemore currently serves in the Fourth Fleet, Task Force 86.

It is commanded by Commander Barin Kayto and supports Task Force 86’s aims of defending the Federation borders by running missions on the edge of Federation space. While capable in a fight, like most Steamrunner-class ships she is not usually assigned for purely tactical missions. Often however she will be the first on a scene, until another more capable ship arrives.

Design and Layout

Designed post first contact with the Borg, the Steamrunner-class is designed to be  capable of defending itself and any accompanying vessels. The ship is designed with a low profile, aiming to decrease the target profile of the ship. This also improves engine efficiencies during extended warp 8+ flight.

The Sizemore was commissioned in 2372 but still is kept in good shape after its years of service to Starfleet.

The ship provides for its crew of 120, with substantial recreation and communal spaces that include a large mess hall, gymnasium, two holodecks, and an aft observation lounge. The entertainment facilities are not, however, so expansive that they can serve comfortably for other ships in the Task Force.

The Steamrunner-class has a small and well stocked medical suite that provides both medical and therapeutic treatments to the crew. Significant issues however are usually triaged and dealt with at Starbase 86 which has a much more capable medical department along with several specialists and operating suits.

Mission Operations

The USS Sizemore has been a ‘Jack of all trades’ type of ship since its move from Task Force 17 to Task Force 86. Based out of Starbase 86 it is often patrolling either the Klingon and Romulan borders while staying on the Federation side. With increased tensions with the Klingons it’s often acting as an early warning sentry for Klingon incursions into Romulan (or Federation) space.

It has also filled the role of transport on occasion. Most notably, taking a runabout and its crew into the Cardassian Neutral Zone and dropping them off to monitor Cardassian activity with the openings of Underspace apertures across the galaxy.

During this period, the USS Sizemore also was one of the Starfleet vessels to escort a damaged USS Luna back to Starbase 86 for repair after it had ventured into one of the openings located in the Triangle.

History

Commissioned in 2372 as Starfleet was redesigning its fleet due to the Borg threat, the USS Sizemore came in the early batches of the popular Steamrunner-class. Originally assigned to Task Force 17 it supported the Task Force’s goal of exploration by providing logistical support to vessels either departing or returning to Federation space. It also was often called upon to retrieve damaged vessels, escorting them back to the Federation if in the course of their exploratory duties they had become damaged in some way.

In 2401 its crew was affected by the events of Fleet Day, and the Borg taking control of younger officers. It sat empty for a few months, before Commander Barin Kayto took over as her commanding officer.

Crew of the Sizemore

Commander Barin Kayto: Commanding Officer

Commander Barin Kayto is the commanding officer of the USS Sizemore. A Betazoid he is relatively junior to be assigned as the CO of a Starfleet vessel, however he was elevated to the position after the Borg attack on Fleet Day after a reconfiguring of Starfleet. Previously he was the Chief Engineer of the Parliament-class ship the USS Halifax. As such he tends to be technically skilled and able to deal with situations that require a familiarity of mechanics. He is comfortable even with scientific concepts outside of his scope of knowledge, able to relate them to mechanical concepts.

As a relatively junior commanding officer Kayto has a tendency to bow to the opinion of more senior officers on other ships. As a Betazoid his preferred way of handling issues tends to be using empathy and diplomacy. Yet once again he will defer to a more experienced CO of another ship, particularly if said captain is of a higher rank.

This desire to compromise and use empathy can often be misconstrued as weakness, however when the chips are down Commander Kayto and the USS Sizemore can be counted on to come through, despite the cost and the difficulty.

Lieutenant Commander Kyle Renault: First Officer / Security Officer

A human and a -bit older than his commanding officer, it would be fair to say that Lieutenant Commander Renault wishes that his career had advanced faster. In his early 30s he’s at least five years older than Kayto. Though not angry at Kayto himself he tends to have a low opinion of Starfleet Command and their orders, likely a factor that has contributed to his slower rise in rank. He finds his CO’s empathetic and diplomatic approach naive in a post Borg attack universe, and has a tendency to want to use the ship more as a weapon than anything else.

Though Renault is a good enough First Officer to respect and follow his commanding officer’s orders, left to his own devices he would take a more forceful approach to situations and CO’s that deal with him, as opposed to Kayto, may find that he wants to shoot first and ask questions later and express a feeling of confinement by orders from Starfleet that go against that.

In Play

  • The USS SIzemore is a Task Force asset and any writer in Task Force 86 may include it in their story.
  • She is useful for providing a ‘hook’ for a mission, either by stumbling on a situation that your ship later needs to handle, or doing the initial surveying of a situation.
  • This is an acceptable ship to rescue or put in peril that your command needs to rescue. However do not kill off any named characters (listed above) or destroy the ship.
  • Let the Task Force CO or XO know of any significant usage of the ship, both so they can approve it and chronicle it.
  • The Sizemore will likely be engaged with duties that protect Federation space, such as patrolling, delivering supplies to border colonies, or shuttling scientists and diplomats to various worlds on the frontier.
  • With Lieutenant Commanders Kayto and Renault you have two officers who can provide two separate types of encounters with the Sizemore. Need it to let you take the lead on a situation, then Kayto’s your guy. Need someone rash to do something a bit too violent, then have Renault be in charge and Kayto off ship at a conference or something.
