Guide:Starbase Bravo Positions
The purpose of this guide is to show you how positions work on Starbase Bravo, including which tiers gain access to which positions and then how those positions fit into the chain of command. For your very first character, you'll be selecting from Tier I positions, until you earn enough Duty Ribbons to advance through the tiers, as explained in the main Starbase Bravo Guide.
To navigate this guide, scroll down to the area you're interested in, and it will list the positions available in each Division, Department, and Section. As you gain access to new tiers, you can choose to promote your existing characters or create a new character. You do not need to stay in the same department/section/division, either. Note: the rank guidelines are not precisely even within each tier across all of the possible position types, to account for some slight variation based on the nature of the particular position.
For more information on all of these positions, checkout the Starfleet Onboard Departments category.
Command Division
Starbase Bravo's commanding officer is currently Vice Admiral Thomas Belvedere, dual-hatted as the sector commander for the Mellstoxx Sector, overseeing all general Starfleet operations in the sector not tied directly to the Fourth Fleet. He is assisted by Captain Javier Reyes, the Executive Officer. While Starbase Bravo hosts the Fourth Fleet's senior command staff, they do not generally interfere directly in station operations except in times of immediate crisis requiring the response of the fleet itself.
Tier | Position | Insignia | Incumbent | Player |
---|---|---|---|---|
VIII | Commanding Officer | Vice Admiral Thomas Belvedere | Bravo Fleet Operations Officer | |
VIII | Executive Officer | Captain Javier Reyes | Bravo Fleet Intelligence Officer |
In addition to the departments listed below, there are some personnel that are directly part of the Command Division and not a particular department or section. Deck Officer is the title given to command division generalists who haven't yet been assigned to a department, and in this role they assist as needed, especially by greeting new arrivals at the various docking bays to accept their transfer orders and help them get where they need to go. Watch Officers supervise Station Operations and other control centers in the absence of more senior officers.
Flight Control Department
The Flight Control Section is responsible both for guiding starships into their berths and small craft launch and recovery procedures, as well as for piloting the station's assigned small craft. These command division officers are numerous, as the station has hundreds of small craft and coordinates thousands of dockings every single day.
- The Small Craft Section is the station's pool of pilots for shuttles and runabouts. Personnel from this section are often assigned to pilot fighters as well, as needed.
- The Space Traffic Control Section is responsible for guiding ships into dock and managing the space around the station. They work from Station Operations, as well as many control rooms spread around the station, one per hanger and several in each major docking complex.
- The Hanger Operations Section is responsible for the movement, storage, and resupply of craft and starships within the station, in the main spacedock and in its various hangers. Repairs, however, are conducted by the Shipyard Operations Section.
- Generalists can work in any of these sections, as needed.
Administration Department
The Administration Department encompasses a wide variety of officers and specialists who make sure the paperwork necessary for keeping such a large base running is handled efficiently. This ranges from helping with crew transfers and the administration of records, to providing one-on-one support for officers in other departments and the station's command staff through the support section.
- The Records Section maintains the station's administrative archive, which contains every log created by every member of the station's crew, as well as the logs from ships assigned to the Mellstoxx Sector. They make sure that everything is filed and coded correctly, and handle everything from collating birth and death records to applying the appropriate classified information standards to various files.
- The Personnel Section handles transfers, promotions, enlistments, retirements, and other personnel-related matters. They serve as career advisors, as well.
- The Support Section (sometimes erroneously called the Yeomanry Section) encompasses all of the stations hundreds of yeomen, who assist senior officers and other personnel in the completion of their duties, run errands, and make deliveries. This section includes both non-officer and officer yeomen.
- Generalists in the administration department go between these different sections as needed.
Civilian Affairs Department
The Civilian Affairs Department is responsible for meeting the needs of the station's large civilian population. This ranges from mediating disputes, assigning quarters, and training on safety to organizing recreational and educational programming. This department includes some civilians in senior roles.
- The Public Relations Section handles communications between the station's administration and its civilian population, through daily briefing messages, several visual and holographic informational programs, and press briefings.
- The Recreation & Morale Section handles organizing programs for residents and crew related to physical and mental well-being, cultural events, and other enrichment programs that range from sporting tournaments, arts and crafts days, and theatrical performances.
- The Education Section is responsible for operating the station's four high schools, eight middle schools, and sixteen elementary/early childhood schools, which provide a standardized Federation education to residents and the families of officers alike.
- Civilian Affairs generalists are usually assigned to solve disputes and help finesse housing assignments to make everyone happy, but also work in public relations or recreation when necessary.
Diplomatic & Consular Affairs Department
Diplomatic & Consular Affairs is responsible for meeting the needs of the station's visiting diplomats and providing consular services to both Federation citizens and non-citizens, which ranges from immigration processing to updating passport documentation. This department also assists the commanding officer through the protocol section with any event where diplomatic niceties come into play. As with civilian affairs, this department includes civilians in some senior roles.
Diplomats and Foreign Agents
As a major starbase, Starbase Bravo plays hosts to multiple Commissions from various Federation member worlds and Consulates from foreign powers.
- Federation diplomats represent the interests of their homeworlds to the CO of Starbase Bravo and to Fourth Fleet leadership, as well as providing some limited services to citizens from those worlds. Not every Federation world has a presence on the base, but Betazed's delegation is particularly large because the colony the station orbits was founded by the Betazoids.
- Alien diplomats represent the interests of foreign powers to the CO of Starbase Bravo and to Fourth Fleet leadership, as well as providing consular services to their citizens. Not every foreign power has a consulate on the station, but as it is home to a numbered fleet, many do.
Strategic Operations Division
The Strategic Operations Division is responsible for the external defense of Starbase Bravo and coordinating between the assets assigned to the sector that are not directly part of the Fourth Fleet.
The station has some generalist strategic operations personnel that aren't part of either the tactical or intelligence departments. These staff members serve in coordination and analysis roles, helping the Strategic Operations Officer and station commander make decisions about where to send assets and which intelligence data to pay attention to.
Tactical Department
The Tactical Department is responsible for the operation of Starbase Bravo's defensive systems, including shields, phasers, and photon torpedoes. They are also frequently assigned to accompany runabouts and small craft on missions across the sector in the same role.
Intelligence Department
The Intelligence Department is responsible for gathering information within the Mellstoxx system and the sector at large, primarily through the interception of communications signals (Signals Intelligence), through direct observation via the station's sensors (Sensors Intelligence), and from sapient sources (Sapient Intelligence).
- The Signals Intelligence Section uses the station's communications arrays to intercept all transmissions in the Mellstoxx system and surrounding sector, looking for patterns in who is sending messages to whom, the encryption being used, and direct interception of messages, when permitted by Federation and Interstellar Law.
- The Sensors Intelligence Section uses the station's sensor arrays to keep a direct eye on all ships in the system and surrounding sector, where permitted by Federation and Interstellar Law. They are especially concerned with tracking foreign vessels within the station's area of influence, particularly cloaked vessels.
- The Sapient Intelligence Section uses networks of sapient people across the Mellstoxx system and surrounding sector to gather regional intelligence. This can consist of officers being dispatched to observe and analyse situations in the field, but also includes the developing, maintaining, and use of networks of contacts across the region.
Starfighter Division Sierra Bravo Four ("Sentinel Division")
As a major defensive installation, Starbase Bravo hosts a permanent starfighter division of 64 craft, split across 2 groups, and 8 squadrons. Starfleet frequently assigns pilots to this division for training in formation maneuvers and to gain piloting hours. Some pilots split their time between fighter duties and general small craft responsibilities. This is an officer-only division. Though a division, it reports under normal circumstances through the Chief Strategic Operations Officer, rather than directly to the First Officer. These fighters most often assist in search and rescue, scanning approaching vessels, and recon duties, as the Mellstoxx system is relatively sedate.

- Starfighter Groups Juliet (SB4-J) and Romeo (SB4-R) consists of two starfighter squadrons each, one with 12 Valkyrie-class interceptors and one with 12 Peregrine-class attack fighters. They each also contain a recon squadron of 12 Sparrow-class fighters. These squadrons are all broken into two sections of six. At any one time, three sections (one of each type) are on patrol and the other half of that group is on hot standby, switching with the other group every twelve hours.
- Starfighter Group Tango (SB4-T) consists of one bomber squadron of 12 Apsara-class craft and one recon squadron of 12 Sparrow-class fighters. This group handles patrols on the edge of the system and beyond.
Operations Division
The Operations Division is responsible for managing the vast logistical needs of the station, keeping resources, data, and personnel moving effectively at all times. This division handles day-to-day activities related to transporters, communications, replicators, and cargo bays, while maintenance is handled by the Engineering Division.
