The USS Praxiteles (NCC-63422) is a Federation Springfield-class science vessel assigned to Arcturus Wayfinding Squadron of Starfleet's Fourth Fleet. Based out of Olympia Station, Praxiteles conducts research missions across the Olympia Sector, following up on the discoveries made by the rest of the squadron. As a secondary duty, she makes up part of Olympia Station's primary defensive screen.
History
Launched in 2365, Praxiteles was built among the last few cohorts of Springfield-class vessels built before that line was cancelled in favor of the more battle-ready Norway-class light cruiser following Starfleet's massive losses at Wolf 359 in early 2367. In the nearly forty years since her construction, she has served multiple tours as both a generalist science vessel and configured to support specific scientific bureaus.
Namesake
The starship Praxiteles is named after the Athenian sculptor Praxiteles (Πραξιτέλης), fl. 360s BCE. While no originals of his work survived into modernity, they were cast and copied extensively by the Romans, and include Hermes and the Infant Dionysus, Resting Satyr, and other sculptures of mythological figures. He is credited as being the first artist to create life-size renditions of nude women in the Greek context.[1]
This is the second starship to bear the name Praxiteles, following a Ptolemy-class tug that was in service from the 2260s, refit in the 2280s, and decommissioned in the 2330s.
