The USS Redding (NCC-75578) is a California-class utility cruiser in service with Starfleet from 2372, currently assigned to Fourth Fleet Command. It is under the command of Captain th'Dytek Sheven and usually lends engineering help to Starfleet and Federation outposts and infrastructures. It rarely sees combat.

History

Over its more than thirty years of service, the USS Redding has served under a great number of Captains and has had a great number of missions. Of particular relevance:

  • Being one of the few ships to maintain the outposts on the Tholian Border during the Dominion War
  • Assisted with the repairs of Stardock 1 after the Battle of Sector 001 against the Borg
  • Helping with preparing the exposition at the Fleet Museum at Athan Prime

Namesake and Legacy

During the 22nd century there was a United Earth ship, the SS Redding. It was a 17-meter-long sub-warp water carrier.

A civilian merchant ship called Redding was launched in 2239. It was captured by the Orion Syndicate in 2265 and used as a boarding ship before being destroyed in battle with the Breen in 2279. That Redding, however, was named in honor of the town in the Falkirk region of Earth, not the Californian city.

There was a 19th-century Andorian ship called Redding. In Andorian, it refers to a sort of snow shovel whose surface is opaque. The importance of the opacity of the shovel isn't clear to non-Andorians.
